Fire Prevention Week runs from October 5-11, 2025, and this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home”, highlights the everyday risks posed by the batteries that power so many of our devices.
The BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, in partnership with the Langford Fire Fighters, Local 2848, is calling on British Columbians to take simple but critical steps to protect their homes and families from fire hazards linked to lithium-ion batteries.
From e-bikes and e-scooters to cell phones, laptops, toys, and power tools, lithium-ion batteries are part of daily life. But when damaged, overheated, or improperly charged, they can quickly become dangerous.
This year’s campaign focuses on key safety reminders:
- Watch for warning signs of a damaged or swollen battery and replace immediately.
- Always use manufacturer-approved chargers.
- Never block safety exits or sleeping areas with charging e-bikes or e-scooters.
- Do not leave batteries in hot cars or expose them to excessive heat.
- Properly recycle old or damaged batteries at designated collection points. Never toss them in the garbage. Improperly discarded batteries can spark fires in garbage trucks and landfills, putting communities at risk.
“We want to ensure families across BC understand how to safely use and dispose of lithium-ion batteries. These are common items in every home, but without proper care, they can put lives at risk,” said Jason Milne, Trail Fire Fighters Local 941 and Chair of Prevention Committee.
The Burn Fund will be sharing resources, tips, and demonstrations throughout Fire Prevention Week to help households recognize the hazards and adopt safe practices. Follow them on social media to stay up to date! @bcburnfund
