Fire Prevention Week™

October 8 – 14, 2023

National Fire Prevention Week promotes fire prevention and how to stay safe in case of a fire. This year’s Fire Prevention Week™ campaign is “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™.”

Promoting Prevention

Every October, the Burn Fund partners with fire fighter locals across the province to promote the rotating theme during National Fire Prevention Week. Announced every June, the theme covers important topics from home escape planning to kitchen safety.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week™ campaign, “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking.

Learn more about Fire Prevention Week™

During Fire Prevention Week™, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Fire fighters provide life-saving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.

The Burn Fund collaborates with fire fighters and burns survivors to promote the Fire Prevention Week™ theme through awareness campaigns across the province. To help bring fire safety into the classroom, the Burn Fund co-hosts an annual Fire Prevention Week™ Contest with the BC Office of the Fire Commissioner. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 are invited to participate by creating a poster or video about fire prevention to be entered to win incredible prizes, such as an iPad or pizza party for their class. For more information about the Fire Prevention Week™ Contest, visit www2.gov.bc.ca/firepreventionweek

National Fire Prevention Week was started by the National Fire Protection Association and is observed by fire fighters and related organizations every year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage.
