Prevention

We are dedicated to supporting the work of prevention partners across the province and promoting provincial and national burn and fire prevention initiatives.

Promoting Prevention

Annual campaigns

Burn injuries can have lifelong physical and psychological consequences. That’s why the Burn Fund partners with fire fighters and prevention partners across the province to promote Burn Awareness Week (February) and Fire Prevention Week™ (October).

The Burn Fund is proud to partner with the Office of the Fire Commissioner, First Nations’ Emergency Services Society of BC, Fire Prevention Officers’ Association of BC, and others on a poster and video contest with schools across BC from grades K – 12. Rotating themes include home escape planning and seasonal fire safety.

Education For Everyone

Most burns are preventable

Our free Too Hot for Tots e-learning course is available to anyone who would like to learn more about scald prevention. Especially relevant to those with toddlers in their lives, this course offers an informative and interactive learning experience in just 30 minutes. Learn from experts and hear personal stories from burn survivors and their families. The course can be accessed by clicking the course video at the bottom of this page.

Scald Prevention

Be aware. Be close. Burn proof homes.

Scalds are the leading cause of burn injuries in children.

Fast Facts:

  • Approximately 150 patients with new burn injuries are treated at BC Children’s Hospital each year alone
  • Scald burns account for 70 percent of all burns in children
  • Scalds are most often caused by hot liquids, steam or hot bath water
  • 78 percent of burn injuries in children happen to children under five
  • Toddlers are at a developmental stage where they need to explore and experiment, often lacking awareness of danger in certain situations
